Stove Maintenance:
Maintaining a wood burning stove is generally an easy task and is something that should be undertaken at least once a year. In order for your stove to perform at its most efficient it is essential that your stove is given a once over to ensure that no components are damaged and to check that there are no blockages that could alter the performance of your woodburner.
Important spare parts to check:
Within a Wood Burning stove there are generally 3 or 4 main "Front Line" spares that more often than not need to be replaced and checked throughout the year.
- Fire Bricks: Fire bricks are one of the most frequently changed spare part due to the fact that they are quite brittle and soft due to their unique material. Fire bricks are designed to insulate and protect the integral walls of your stove to avoid too much stress on the stove body. Incorrectly loading fuel or throwing logs into the firebox causing the fuel to come in contact with the bricks can cause the fire bricks to crack. Check the fire bricks for any signs of cracks and crumbling sections. If any bricks are crumbled and are exposing the stove body then you should replace immediately.
- Baffle/Throat plate: The baffle plate which is also known as the Throat Plate is a steel or cast iron angled plate and sits above the fire bricks and just below the flue exit (flue collar). The flue baffle is extremely important as the baffle slows down the flames and ensures the heat stays in the firebox longer and stops the flames causing damage to the flue. The baffle should be periodically checked for warping or cracking (for cast baffles) and the throat plate should be replaced should you see any signs of warping or sagging.
- Fire bars and Fire Grates: Some stoves come with a fire grate which usually consists of a circular centre grate that can be riddled using an external bar. Some stoves come complete with a static grate and others come complete with a set of fire bars. The fire bars or grates need to be checked to ensure they have not become blocked or cracked.
- Door & Glass Seals: checking the door and glass seals throughout the year is an important task for a few reasons. The first reason is that if your stove is allowing air into the fire box it will mean that the fire can burn uncontrollably meaning you burn more fuel and you can also damage other internal components due to the stove over heating. It is also important to check these seals for safety reasons as you would not want any fumes escaping the fire box.
